2006 Conference "Foundations of Care" Summary Our 9th Ontario Provincial Conference "Foundations of Care" was held in April 2006 in Ottawa at the Ottawa Congress Centre. The conference was attended by 300 plus delegates over the three day meeting. All those delegates in attendance would agree that it was a huge success in meeting our educational needs, supplying us with opportunities to view our Industry partners' exhibits, and allowing us time to socialize, network and learn from one another. The opening keynote speaker, sponsored by JJMP, was Ginette Rodgers who delivered a motivating "Foundations of Care" introduction for all perioperative nurses. Other topics covered throughout the conference were: Green light PVP laser, Working together with respect (sponsored by Medline), Mentoring (sponsored by JJMP), Correct site surgery (JJMP), Privacy & confidentiality (JJMP), PACU is closed (JJMP), Transfer of accountability (JJMP), Quality of work life (JJMP), Metal allergies (Medline), Perioperative nursing in partnership with the patient care continuum, E-learning (JJMP), Laparoscopic colon surgery, Donation with cardiocirculatory death, What am I waiting for, Pandemic planning (Medline), Bariatric surgery (JJMP), and Chicken soup for the perioperative nurse manger (JJMP). Our closing keynote speaker, also sponsored by JJMP, was Bobbie Staten. Bobbie is a Registered Nurse and a humorist, and her presentation "Batteries not included" left everyone in good humour, ready to go back to work, look after themselves and make some changes in their own OR. There were 14 posters on display in the exhibit area which were judged by their peers. All posters were thought provoking and informative making the contest exciting. Canada Endoscope sponsored the $500.00 first place prize. The exhibit hall was full with 49 companies displaying their goods over 71 booths for delegates to stroll through. Prizes for the passport were generously donated by priMED and ConMed Linvatec. During the exhibit hours each day, OPEAC had a draw for two $300.00 educational sponsorship awards, if your name was called and you were in the exhibit hall, you won the award. The winners this year were:
Tuesday: Anita Esson & Shahnaz Khorshidi Wednesday: Jane Radey & Rachel Clermont The 2006 Exhibitors committee under the Presidency of Norma Lapointe (priMED), did an excellent job of supporting the conference committee with their work and finding sponsorship for events. A very heartfelt "Thank you" goes to Norma and the rest of the OPEAC committee: Bradd Hara, Yarko Horvath, & Colin DeSouza who gave of their time to attend meetings and ensure everything was in place for a successful conference. Our social events this year were spectacular: starting with the cocktail party and fashion show on Sunday night. The Ottawa orthopedic surgeons donated a $500.00 gift certificate to the nurse who could name all the pieces of otho equipment that was attached to the fashion models clothing. The winner of that contest was: Karen Lowe, from CHEO. After the cocktail party, Linvatec Canada invited the nurses to join them at a pub night. Monday night was the sponsored ORNAO/Exhibitor dinner/dance evening. CeCe Pastor and the Word of Mouth band came from Toronto to once again entertain us until the wee hours of the morning. Tuesday evening was "A Taste of Canada" special event for the delegates sponsored by AMT Electrosurgery at the historic Chateau Laurier Hotel. The evening was a glorious affair, with renowned Canadian Chef Michael Smith overseeing the cooking and delivery of an all Canadian meal. Michael then gave a talk, allowed the delegates to take pictures and signed his cookbook "Cooking with and without a recipe: CHEF AT HOME", which AMT had provided for every delegate in attendance. This was indeed a once in a lifetime event , so special thanks goes to AMT Electrosurgery, and especially Bruce MacDonald for the planning of this event to occur. I must thank the ORNAO executive and board, who gave tirelessly of their time to perform both hostess and moderator duties. Lastly, I must give a huge "THANK YOU" to my planning committee who made the conference a raging success through their hard work and dedication. 2004 Conference Summary The 2004 Provincial Conference held in Toronto was attended by approximately 350 people over the 3 day meeting. ORNAO gives a huge thank you to Johnson & Johnson Medical Products for their generous financial support that assists us to cover our speakers' costs. The following summary was provided by Kathy Bruce, 2004 Conference Chairperson. Preliminary feedback from the delegates indicates that once again the educational content met their needs. Back by popular demand was Diane Miller as our keynote speaker. Her topic was "Celebrating Essence - Envisioning Nursing's Future". She challenged us to think outside the box and recognize the impact we have on our patients by our every action. Diane also spoke in a concurrent session about the imperatives of effective change in our workplaces. As usual her delivery was humorous and thought-provoking. Other speakers covered topics such as Scheduling, Bone Allografts, Breast Cancer Management, and Workplace experiences with CJD, Creative ways to finance the RNFA role, the Surgical Liaison Nurse Role, Body Piercing, SARS, the Perioperative Nursing Shortage, and many other timely topics. Most of our speakers were Perioperative Registered Nurses who did a splendid job sharing their knowledge, expertise and ideas with colleagues. The 12 Poster presentations by nurses were thought-provoking and informative. The exhibit hall was filled once again and we thank our Industry Partners for their continued support of our conferences. Four lucky nurses received a $250.00 cash prize for completing their exhibit passports. The prizes were donated by Karl Storz Endoscopy and Medline/Maxxim.
